After losing the race for London Mayor to Ken Livingstone, Mr Johnson has accepted the offer of taking forward the Environment Portfolio within his cabinet.
His responsibilities will include taking the lead on strategies for noise, biodiversity and air quality as well as water, transport, planning and economic development.
He said: "This is a real opportunity to ensure that Londoners get the improvements to the environment they deserve."
