Maj John Matthews
AN ARMY major who served in India, Burma and Korea has died, aged 90. Maj John Bessant Matthews enlisted in June 1940 and served in India and Burma, rising quickly through the ranks.Records show he was a lieutenant in India and a captain when he left for Burma.He was attached to the Middlesex Regiment and the 21st Indian Regiment.During 1951-54, he served in Korea where he became a major and was mentioned in despatches. Maj Matthews, who lived at the Orchards, Newport, was a member of the Friends of the Burma Star and the Royal British Legion (RBL). His interests included model railways and he was a member of the IW Model Railway Society.Maj Matthews leaves a sister, Nellie, who emigrated to Canada, and he has two nephews in Vancouver.His funeral was held at St George’s Church, Arreton, and was attended by RBL members, the British Korean Veterans Association and the Friends of the Burma Star.
