ISLAND sporting legend Frederick 'Dave’ Attrill died suddenly after watching England’s Ashes-winning heroes.
The 64 year old, staying in London to see the fifth Test match at The Oval, was taken ill at his hotel after enjoying a meal out with friends, following the third day’s play on Saturday.
Apart from his family, his two greatest loves were football and cricket — and he was a star of both.
Mr Attrill, of Barfield, Ryde, had a long and successful footballing career, beginning as a prolific free-scoring forward for Newport, Cowes Sports and Brading where he won league titles and numerous trophies.
He progressed into management as the boss at both West Wight and Ventnor.
In the summer, the Spurs football fan switched his attentions to cricket where he was still a skilful opening batsman for Brading CC as well as being the club groundsman.
His good friend, Shanklin auctioneer Tim Smith, who accompanied him to the match, said: "We had watched the day’s play and really enjoyed it.
"He loved every moment. He was one of those really nice guys who was a bit of a joker and who loved his sport. His death is very sad, but he died doing something he loved."
Born in Brading on June 26, 1945, Mr Attrill was the eldest son of six children to parents, the late Frederick and Adelaide (nee Jacobs).
Mr Attrill grew up in Brading and Niton and attended Niton Primary and Ventnor Secondary schools. While he was at Ventnor Secondary, he had trials for Portsmouth Football Club.
When he left school at 15, he worked as a labourer at Redhill Farm, Whitwell, and joined the Royal Hampshire Regiment two years later.
During his three-year army career, Mr Attrill saw the celebrations in Kingston when Jamaica became independent in 1962.
Following a short spell at Trucast in Ryde, he spent the next 26 years as a distribution craftsman with Southern Gas until retirement. He managed a national gas board soccer team that achieved a European trophy success in the early nineties.
He was also a former member of Ryde Golf Club.
Mr Attrill married his wife, Celia, at St Helens Church, on April 1, 1967.
He is survived by his wife, brothers Peter, Myer and Will and a large extended family.
