Mr Kenneth Robert Coles

Friday, July 26, 2013 - 9:55

A WARTIME RAF crewman who escaped from captivity by the Germans four times during the Second World War has died, aged 94.
Kenneth Robert Coles, known as Bob, was emotionally reunited with his downed aircraft in 1998, 47 years after he was shot down over Holland.
A Dutch fisherman contacted Mr Coles, and the former aerial observer revisited Wiersum to relive his wartime feats.
Originally taken to a Luftwaffe hospital in Amsterdam during 1941, Mr Coles escaped by stealing clothes and boots from other patients.
With other colleagues, he then scaled the hospital walls using tied bed sheets, and began a four-year struggle for freedom. He was later awarded an MBE for his gallant efforts during the war.
Born in 1919, Mr Coles originally came from Kettering, Northampton-shire, and trained as a graphic designer at Northampton School of Art.
He married Alice Keenor, a Canadian he had met before the outbreak of hostilities, and they moved to Lake.
In 1946, Mr Coles took a post at printing company J. Arthur Dixon, and from 1972 until his retirement he worked as a freelance photographer and house renovator.
The couple would have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary in 2005, but Mrs Coles, nicknamed Sally, died six months earlier.
They were much involved with community activities, being members of Shanklin Rotary Club and winning Brading in Bloom competitions with their prize garden at Little Beck, Yarbridge.
Mr Coles lived there until he was 93 and spent his remaining months under the care of Sunnycliffe, Sandown.
He was scoutmaster of 1st Shanklin scouts and transformed the group hut into a holiday home for those at the National Children’s Home in Gosport.
Mr Coles leaves his children, Della and Simon, and his funeral will be at The IW Crematorium, Whippingham, on Wednesday, at noon.

This week's announcements will be online by 4.30pm today (Friday)
