A MAN well known in Island sporting circles, particularly at the cricket clubs of Shanklin and Ventnor, has died, aged 95.
Les Fleming, of Yarborough Road, Godshill, was an umpire and took his last game at the age of 81.
Les also refereed many sporting events during his days in London, before moving to the Island in 1945.
He was born in Fulham, in 1914.
He met his close friend, Ruth Woodward, in 1979 and lived with her at Godshill, until his death on Sunday.
Les worked at the County Press as a compositor, putting type together to print the newspaper. He retired in 1979.
He also had spells working in Shanklin at the IW Chronicle and at J. Arthur Dixon, in Forest Road, Newport, producing publications including postcards and Christmas cards.
Ruth said: "Les was a marvellous man. He was always involved in something and even used to arrange all the Christmas parties when he worked at the
CP."
The funeral is at 2.15pm on Wednesday, at the IW Crematorium, followed by a wake at Newclose County Cricket Ground. All friends are welcome.
