A SURGEON who worked at St Mary’s Hospital for 20 years has died, aged 59.
Mark Shinkfield, a consultant general surgeon, was forced to retire from his role due to illness in December last year.
He trained in general surgery in London teaching hospitals before he came to the IW in 1996.
Mr Shinkfield died on Monday, April 3, following illness.
He was an honorary consultant surgeon at Southampton General Hospital, and held lead clinician and managerial roles in the development of cancer services on the Island.
In July 2016, Mr Shinkfield took part in the Three Peaks Challenge to raise funds for West Wight Sports Centre.
He was married to Freshwater GP Dr Joy Marshall and they have three grown-up children.
Dr Mark Pugh, executive medical director and acting chief executive at IW NHS Trust, said: “Mark was well respected across the trust and had been ill for a while.
“He worked as a dedicated professional to ensure the best service and care was provided to patients.
“He was supportive of colleagues and the trust. I know that colleagues around the trust join me in sending condolences to Mark’s family and friends.”
Mr Shinkfield’s funeral was held on Wednesday at St John’s Church, Newport, and at the IW Crematorium.
