A FORMER stone mason and wood carver, William (Bill) Birch, has died, aged 74.

Mr Birch, of Trafalgar Road, Newport, served in the Royal Engineers, before he became a stonemason and wood carver.

He produced work which can be seen across the Island, including at Osborne House and the Minster Church of Sts Thomas.

After his retirement, Mr Birch pursued his interest in photography and he enjoyed taking pictures of the Island’s countryside and wildlife.

He also used to visit elderly people in their homes to provide voluntary care.

Mr Birch was never married and he had no children.
