A HOSPITAL and hospice volunteer, Doris May Stewardson, has died, aged 90.
Mrs Stewardson, of Milne Way, Shide, died of cancer at The Limes care home, Bembridge, on December 30.
Born in Cheshire on August 4, 1926, to Frank and Florence Diamond, she was the eldest of eight children.
The family moved to Failsworth, near Manchester, when she was a child. After leaving school, she worked in a bakery and as a seamstress before running a corner shop.
She met and married Royal Navy stoker James Charles Stewardson when she was a teenager and they had two children.
The couple moved to the Island and bought the White House Hotel, Shanklin, in 1963, which they ran until they retired.
They moved first to Yarmouth then Shide.
Mrs Stewardson was a volunteer driver at St Mary’s Hospital for 15 years and volunteered at the Earl Mountbatten Hospice into her late 80s.
Following the death of her husband in 2012, she celebrated her 90th birthday with friends and family who flew from Canada and the USA.
She leaves her two children, Susan Mootaz, 63, and Ian Stewardson, 61, and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at the IW Crematorium on Thursday at 3.45pm.
