Mrs Edith Gallop-Hooper.
A FORMER Shanklin hotelier who took in troops during the Second World War has died, aged 102.
Edith Gallop-Hooper, of Greyfriars Residential Home, Shanklin, was born in Portsmouth, to Henry and Eliza Evans, and was one of five children.
She came to the IW in her early twenties to work as a barmaid at the Marine Hotel, Shanklin, and married Islander Arthur Gallop, a master baker and confectioner, in 1929. They had three children, Daphne, Noel and David, who died three years ago.
During the war, they ran the Clarendon Hotel, Shanklin, and Mrs Gallop-Hooper would look after the soldiers who stayed there. The couple also used to organise raffles and whist drives for war charities. Mrs Gallop-Hooper later worked as a chambermaid at various Sandown hotels.
Mr Gallop died in 1972 and Mrs Gallop-Hooper married her second husband, Arthur Hooper, in 1975, but he died three years later.
Mrs Gallop-Hooper loved gardening, holidays, photography, knitting and walking her dogs.
She leaves her children, eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs Gallop-Hooper’s funeral was held at the IW Crematorium yesterday (Thursday), followed by a wake at Shanklin Conservative Club.
