A FORMER wartime bus conductress and long-time resident of Nettlestone, Mrs Ivie Louise Mary Hall (nee Porter), has died, aged 95.
Although born in Thetford, Norfolk, she arrived in Nettlestone as a baby and remained there for most of her life until forced by ill health to move to a nursing home in the final months before her death on May 29.
She had a brother and two sisters, who died before her, and was educated in Nettlestone School before working locally in a cafe and as a shop assistant.
She joined Southern Vectis during the Second World War as a conductress at Ryde depot where much of the work was taking workers to factories and shipyards.
She remained in the post until 1946.
In 1944, she married Jack Hippisley, who she met as he was stationed at the Nettlestone gun camp, manning the ack-ack gun. Their daughter, Sharman, was born in 1949.
The marriage ended in divorce in 1965 and, in 1977, she married Brian Hall at the IW Register Office for a marriage lasting 40 years.
In the 1950s, she worked at her old school at Nettlestone on playground duty but then rejoined Southern Vectis in 1960, serving another 17 years.
Mrs Hall was a keen gardener and also enjoyed knitting.
She was also keen on driving her car and always kept a dog, usually a fox terrier.
She leaves her husband, daughter and son-in-law, Kerry.
The funeral service was held at the IW Crematorium.
