MAUREEN Stolworthy, a well-known and well respected former county councillor, who held the post of chairman of education for 14 years, has died at the age of 77.
Mrs Stolworthy, nee Fleming, graduated in English and was awarded a diploma in education.
After an early teaching career, she married Cpt John Stolworthy in 1957, who had various postings, including three years in Malaya.
He retired from the army in 1977, having reached the rank of major, and took up the post of chief education officer at Parkhurst Prison. He died ten years ago.
Mrs Stolworthy, of Brocks Copse Road, Wootton,  was elected to the county council in 1981 and later became chairman of education, a post she held for 14 years.
In 1995, she became the first chairman of the new unitary authority and held this post for two years before retiring.
A keen gardener and avid reader, Mrs Stolworthy also served as a governor at Medina High and Wootton Primary schools and only recently stepped down as chair of Carisbrooke Castle museum’s trust. She leaves her daughter, Clare, and son-in-law, Robert Hierons.
The funeral service is being held at 11am at St Edmund’s Church, Wootton, next Friday, June 19, followed by burial at Fernhill Park, Wootton.
Family flowers only with donations to Feline Welfare in honour of her beloved cats, Turner and Sam.
