Mrs Violet May Stone

Mrs Violet May Stone

A WOMAN who devoted much of her  time to starting Pan Carnival has died.

Violet May Stone, 88, was born in October, 1920, and was the daughter of Samuel and Ethel Newton. She was one of nine children.

She married Fred Stone in 1943 and had ten children.

Most of her working life was spent in laundries around the IW, starting in Laundry Lane, Newport, then Cowes and finally St Helens.

She later went to work at Inglefield care home, Fresh-water.

Widowed in 1980, she devoted a lot of time to starting Pan Carnival 28 years ago and attended carnivals all over the Island for many years.

She was also involved in forming what is now the Denise Palmer School of Dancing.

Around 15 years ago, she met Charlie Pardy, an old friend who became a close companion until he died two years ago, aged 100.

She leaves eight children, 26 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.

Her funeral was held at the crematorium, followed by a wake at the Ambassador Club, Gunville.
