Chingford...............18

Lowestoft & Yarmouth...............10

(London League North Div Two)

THE rugby wasn't much better than the conditions on a dismal day at Waltham Way, but Chingford still managed to emerge with two vital points.

Andy Bell opened the Chingford scoring with a well-struck penalty and, shortly afterwards, Neil Carlsson scored their first try.

He superbly turned defence into attack and followed a huge clearing kick down the field to go over in the corner.

This gave the home side the advantage and they hung on despite some heavy pressure from Lowestoft who were anxious to open their account.

Chingford had to defend resolutely but they hung on and reached half-time leading 8-0.

The home side were back on top for the beginning of the second half, another Bell penalty extending their lead before the same man put the game out of Lowestoft's reach.

He used his considerable weight to crash over for a deserved try which he duly converted to make it 18-0.

It wasn't until two minutes from the end that Lowestoft finally broke through as Chingford relaxed with the game long since won. The visitors sneaked through for two soft tries, but it was too little, too late.
