Burnt Oak speedway star Ian Clarke, back in the saddle after only two weeks after an emergency operation for a strangulated hernia, screamed to second place against international opposition in a 36-strong field at the Southern Track Riders' Open Championship at Kings Lynn on Saturday.

Sixteen-year-old Ian of Watling Avenue, who rides for Reading Racers in the Premier League, saw off opposition from Sweden, Denmark and Norway, but had to give second-best to fellow countryman Chris Courage in the final.
