VANDALS who threw white paint over speed cameras in Wootton Bridge have been condemned by a safety body.

The two fixed cameras in the High Street were targeted last weekend.

A spokesman for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Road Safety Partnership said: “The cameras were installed because 18 people were injured in collisions on this stretch of road between 2000 and 2002.

“Five of those sustained serious injuries.

“This attack shows no respect for those injured and displays the same sort of mindless behaviour as the vandalising of lifebelts and other life-saving equipment. Fortunately, these types of attacks occur seldomly, as most people appreciate cameras are there to save lives.”

The incident is being investigated by police and mobile units will patrol the area until the cameras are repaired.
