A WEEK of Global Rock Challenges for Island schools started on a high note.

Ryde’s Dover Park Primary School took second place overall in Junior Rock on Monday, while Gatten and Lake Primary School won a prize for interpretation of their Olympics - One World, One Dream.

Dover Park followed up its win of two years ago with its Open Your Mind, Open a Book on the Portsmouth Guildhall stage against nine Hampshire schools.

The performance, which judges said made their subject books come alive, also won for the school performers prizes for the best school community support and content originality.

They had been rehearsing the show since September. It was put together by teacher Ian Townsend and, like Gatten and Lake, the pupils faced competition from older children because of the age group differences in the Island and mainland school systems.

Yesterday (Tuesday) Ryde’s Oakfield CE Primary School Community Project, Greenmount CE and Sandown’s Broadlea Primary were the Island schools taking part in the non-competitive showcase event at the Guildhall.

On Wednesday Ryde High was performing Autumn of Terror in the first open final and yesterday (Thursday), Sandown High was staging Mirror, Mirror: The Twisted Tale of White.

Cowes High will today (Friday) take its Too Much, Too Young to the Southern Premier Final and Barton Primary will stage a special showcase performance of its Southampton Junior Rock Challenge winning Concrete Angel.

Global Rock and Junior Rock are supported by councils and the police, attracting thousands of young people and promoting the natural “high” of performing instead of drink and drugs.
