Back in Victorian times householders in Boreham Wood could buy a pint of locally-brewed beer and a pound of sausages at the same village shop.
By 1839 a butcher who had a shop in Theobald Street, Thomas Olney, had set up a small brewery next to his house, and was selling the produce.
The brewery was later taken over by John Cockburn, after Mr Olney's death in 1871, and it continued to produce beer up until the 1890s.
During the 1830s a brewery was run by William Fitch in Watford Road, Elstree, which is believed to have been near to the site of the modern Fishery Inn.
In 1889 Alfred Parkins, who had worked for Mr Cockburn, set up a rival brewery in Theobald Street, which later became Elstree Star Brewery and closed in 1920.
