Mystery still surrounds the discovery this week of a man's body in Dollis Brook in Woodside Park.

As police continued their investigation, a source said the identity of the person remained unknown and the death was being treated suspiciously.

The corpse was discovered by a woman out walking in Riverside Walk, Lullington Garth, at around 2pm on Tuesday.

As the open space was cordoned off to allow detectives to inspect the scene, passers-by gathered at the entrance and tried to see what was going on.

It was a surreal sight as children on half-term played in the continuation of the park over the road while forensic officers went about their business a short distance away.

According to police, the deceased was a white man wearing a three-quarter-length black coat, beige trousers and blue trainers.

A post mortem examination took place at Finchley Mortuary yesterday but the coroner's officer was unable to say more until identification. An inquest is expected to open tomorrow. Without official word of the deceased's identity or age, speculation was rife among residents. Several parents said they would not be letting their children play in the park until assurances by police.

Fred Westphal, Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator for Sussex Ring, said the place was usually quiet. "It is a nice area. We have had some trouble with yobs, but we've got rid of them now. Otherwise it's peaceful."

Witnesses should call 0181 733 1212 and ask for Colindale CID.
