VOLUNTEERS will aim to increase awareness about counselling and mediation services for those with relationship problems during Samaritans Week which begins tomorrow (Saturday).

The week is aimed at people in crisis who may not know where to look for help, and prospective volunteers who have energy and time to give but do not know where to do so.

Director of the South West Herts Samaritans, which covers Watford, St Albans and Hemel Hempstead, Ms Adrienne Cohen, said: 'We have one golden rule - we won't stop listening.

'People in despair, or feeling hurt, embarrassed, suicidal, shame, isolated, useless, empty, helpless, rejected, confused, angry or feel down, guilty and have low-esteem; we are here for them.

'Our aims are the same as they were when our branch began, 30 years ago, to be there 24 hours a day for those going through crisis.

'We are not here to judge, or criticise or to give advice, but listen and care for as long as they need us.'

South West Herts Samaritans handle more than 42,000 calls a year and the volume is increasing rapidly. The group is using the week to appeal for more help in manning phones 24 hours a day and in fundraising.

Ms Cohen said: 'We need people who are good listeners, caring, compassionate and non-judgemental; we provide a fully comprehensive training course to prepare all volunteers before they actually take calls.

'We are a charity and only survive by the generosity of local people and organisations. It costs around £25,000 a year to run our local Samaritans branch; so during Samaritans Week we hope local people, local companies and local organisations will be extra generous allowing us the continuing privilege of helping local people in crisis.'
