A NAZEING businessman is giving his backing to Britain joining the euro.o

Nazeing Glassworks chairman Stephen Pollock Hill is part of the Britain in Europe committee which is dedicated to raising awareness on how the single currency could be beneficial in the future.

He says he hopes the campaign will raise awareness in the area that the euro is the only way to go.

Mr Pollock-Hill told the Guardian: "Now that the rest of Europe has adopted the euro as its own currency we have to be thinking of doing the same. As the euro becomes a major currency, the pound will be left further and further behind.

Mr Pollock-Hill hopes the East of England Yes campaign will show the benefits of the new currency.

"Hopefully this new campaign, with a prominent local figure heading it, will help to dispel the myths about the euro and show local businesses that it could work to their advantage."

He added: "As far as local business is concerned, it's going to become harder for us to trade, especially if we still deal in pounds.

"My own company already has to have two separate accounts, one in pounds and one in euros. Businesses in this area will eventually find it easier if they can deal directly in euros, it will open up more opportunities for them."

Mr Pollock Hill has been part of the campaign since it began.

Even though he is for the euro, he does still say that the time is not right yet.

"People don't completely trust it yet, it will still take three or four years before we join. The hope is that through this new campaign we can show how the euro is the best option for the future."
