RUGBYA GIRLS’ rugby team from Bishop Lovett Middle School shared the spoils at the St George’s Day Sevens tournament at Twickenham RFC last week.
The Year 7 team opened the tournament against Gillingham school and ran out comfortable winners, with tries scored by Hannah Langridge, two and Molly Bartlett.
Their second game was against Island rivals, Mayfield Middle and Bishop Lovett dominated, with some strong tackling and powerful running resulting in a 12-5 victory, Bartlett scoring both Bishop Lovett’s tries.
Knowing a win in their final group game, against Aldridge School, would secure a place in the final, Bishop Lovett attacked from the start.
Langridge, Ellie Symons, Jodi Penn and Bartlett all scored tries as Bishop Lovett won 20-5. The final against Liskard School, from Cornwall, was a bruising affair, with both sets of girls flying into tackles.
Twice Bishop Lovett went close to scoring, firstly with Langridge being tackled into touch five metres from the try line and then Bartlett was held up on the line.
The match ended in a draw and both teams shared the trophy.
The girls had a magnificent day, meeting members of the England women’s rugby team and watching the Premiership match between Bath and Wasps at Twickenham.
The icing on the cake for many of the girls was watching X Factor winner Alexander Burke perform at half time.
