IW II 17, Romsey II 14
IW II’s unbeaten home record remained intact on Saturday in a closely contested Merit 3 clash at Wootton Rec.
Romsey travelled with 12 players, so the IW loaned them two players and played 14-a-side, in order to ensure a competitive fixture. Loanees Damion Greenough and Isaac Lee both impressed for the visitors.
Romsey broke through first with a fine try but this only served to galvanise the hosts and they responded with a converted score of their own to draw level, flanker — and Rouse Ltd man of the match — Reuben Mitchell touching down, and Joe Greedy kicking the conversion.
In the second half, IW secured enough clean ball to move the Romsey pack around and attack space. Replacement Will Peters also had a major impact, breaking tackles and offloading in a timely fashion. One such move gave the IW the lead as Greedy was sent over wide for an unconverted try and a 12-7 advantage. They later put ten points between themselves and the visitors as Peters passed to Greedy for his second, unconverted try.
Romsey hit back shortly afterwards, taking advantage of IW indecision to score under the posts and narrow the gap to three points. It made for a nervous finale, and Romsey had a long distance penalty chance which could have yielded a draw, but was pushed wide.
IW II: Harley, Lyle, Greedy, Puckett, Brading, Cotter, Metcalfe, Love, Moffat, J Wright, Keyes, Frost-Jones, Mitchell, Harrison, Freeman, Peters, Taylor, Coates, Lee, Greenough.
