SAILINGGurnard SC

A LIGHT win posed a challenge for the race officer, who settled for a beat up the shore against the tide and a run back to the clubhouse.

Trying out his new rig, Paul Tanner took the gun ahead of fair weather expert, Lawrie Gustar, with Tony Wyeth in third place. James Downer, fresh from winning the RS400 event at Lake Garda, carved out a convincing lead over Graham Deegan on the beat up to the windward mark and he never looked back.

The fast handicap class struggled to make a fist of the course in the light conditions, particularly the trapezing RS800s and RS700s. Steve Cole finished the race convincingly ahead of Richard Fagan in the other 800, but he could not beat Ben Green in his Contender on handicap.

In the RS100s medium class, Chris Gillies had the better start but he could not hold off vice-commodore Mark Harrison, who took the gun and the win ahead of Phil Wright.

Robbie Southwell was first of the Lasers but he could get near the RS100s on handicap.

In the slow handicap class, thirteen-year-old Georgia Caws, sailing her Pico Race, took a convincing win over second-placed Gabriella Southwell, with Harry Blowers performing well to take third place on handicap.

Meanwhile, cat sailors Robin Leather, Dougie Wright, Sarah Younger, Paul Jennings and Mike Martin returned from Yaverland bearing silverware in the form of the Tri-club Challenge trophy.

Yarmouth SC

Winds gusted to force five during the all-girl Oppie race on Saturday, won by Helen Sceales.

Emma Gillett’s Pico gained first place in the Handicap class with Joy Mowle’s Topper in second and Oliver Trotter, in a Pico, in third.

Mary Lord took control of the GRP Scows race from the start and held off a challenge from Nick Measor, to take first place. Nick was second and John Bennet third.

Harry Jones was first in the WWSC, with Dick Davis second and Martin Palmer, crewed by his daughter, third.

A junior Oppie race on Sunday attracted 11 boats in a very light wind. With a shortened course at the end of the first round, Helen Sceales was first, Lizzie Gillet was second and Anthony Stanley third. After an hour’s postponement, the lack of wind resulted in the cancellation of all other class racing.

Bembridge SC

It was a quiet week on the water, with only Oppy 2 and a small number of One-Designs racing.

A larger than normal Oppy 2 went off well, again helped by the good weather, although the squall on Wednesday afternoon provided a test for the instructors.

The cup and trophy winners were: Curling Cup (most improved) — Georgina Pollock, Biggest Pot (racing) — Oscar Chalmers, best kept oppy — Adair Verey.

The Redwings had some excellent racing at Cowes, particularly Justin Biddle and Nick Woolgar, who won the Janson Salver as the overall winners.

Alex Marshall was the only taker for the Hulbert Prize (under 19s) on Saturday morning in the One-Designs and James Nainby-Luxmoore, in No 11, was the convincing winner of the Brinton Trophy.
