GURNARD SC
THE club’s Laser Open meeting was held with the prevailing light breeze providing the only sail-able wind of the weekend.
Sixteen boats of all three Laser rig types took part, with a contingent from Royal Victoria YC visiting to take on the home sailors.
Under race officer Chris Evans, five races were run from a committee boat in the bay, and the day belonged to RVYC’s Richard Talbot, who was consistently at the front of the fleet with three wins.
Jim McMillan, another visitor from Wootton Creek, and the home club’s Brett Aarons had a close scrap for second overall, taking a win apiece, with McMillan squeezing through at the close by a single point.
Chris Hobday and Libby Deegan dead-heated in the first race, after which Hobday’s consistency ensured fifth spot by one point, despite Libby’s notable second place in the final race.
Sunday dawned windless, and club racing was cancelled.
YARMOUTH SC
The first race in the October series was sailed on Saturday in a variable north-easterly wind which, coupled with a strong incoming tide, resulted in a shortened course.
Alex Gallimore took charge of the Picos in the handicap race and finished well ahead of Ian Meadows and Tim Lee.
In the Scows, Chris Parsloe started out at the front but eventually finished third after a good scrap, with Graeme Bowen taking the win and Mike Sheaf second.
In Sunday’s light breeze, the Picos in the handicap class were again joined the Crabber 12 sailed this time by Ian North and Tim Lee. Alex made it a weekend double by taking first with Joy Mowle second and Ian and Tim third.
There was a good turnout of Scows and by the first mark Graeme, John Bennet and Mike had established themselves at the head of the fleet.
They remained unchallenged and finished in this order.
