Extreme win for McMillan

Friday, December 14, 2012

SAILING ISLAND sailing start Leigh McMillan has skippered The Wave, Muscat, to overall glory in the Extreme Sailing Series — but the final round result was the closest margin in its history.

McMillan, a member of Gurnard Sailing Club and a double Olympian, won the double-points final round in Rio by just 0.2 points ahead of Groupe Edmond de Rothschild.

He said: "We are over the moon and we are absolutely thrilled to win here in Rio."

Going into the final round, McMillan, and crew Ed Smyth, Hannah Mills, Peter Greenhalgh and Hashim Al Rashidi were the hot favourites to win. They only needed to finish sixth or above but took the victory to cemented their place at the top.

In the end, they won the series with 76.5 points, with Oman Air second and the Rothschild team third.
