SAILING

THREE IW sailors are setting sail for one of the most famous races in the world this weekend — the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race.

John Jones, of Newport, Sam Pearson, of Cowes, and professional sailor Jonny Malbon, of Gurnard, will all be racing from Sunday, when the fleet of 28 boats set off from Cowes at noon.

Jonny, who set a new course record for an IMOCA 60 in the last race in 2010 on Artemis Ocean Racing, will be part of the crew of Class40 Concise 8, with Ned Collier-Wakefield.

Sam will also be on board Concise 8, while John will be on Keith Gibb’s C&C115, Change of Course.

The record for this race is just over five days but, depending on the weather, it could take up to two weeks as the sailors race round all the Island of Britain and Ireland in a clockwise direction.
