A HARDY band of sailors braved a cold northerly force four breeze for the club’s New Year’s Day fun race, held inside of Bembridge Harbour.

Race officer John Garlick set a course to include a variety of beats, runs and reaches for the two classes involved, and with the fast handicap setting off first, it did not take them long to get to the first mark down by the entrance in the northerly reach.

Martyn Davies headed the fleet all the way round and earned himself line and corrected time honours sailing his Contender with Gareth Jones, in his Solo, second.

Roger and Gill Herbert made a close third position in their Wayfarer with John Whitehead and Colette Twohig fourth, sailing a 420.

The slow handicap was a battle between husband and wife with Mike Quinn sailing a Scow and wife, Kim, in her Mirror.

After half an hour of bitter racing, Mike just had the edge to take the winning slot with Kim a very close second.

Fortunately it was make-up time in the bar afterwards.
