Wood captain Garry Wotton awaits the return from holiday of manager Graham Roberts later this week as he continues to ponder his Meadow Park future.

The commanding 26-year-old former Plymouth, Reading and Cheltenham central defender led the team to the Ryman Division One title after joining Wood from Aylesbury last November, but has recently been the subject of substantial offers from two other clubs.

One of which is understood to be from Premier Division rivals Chesham United, who Wotton numbers among his previous clubs, but Meadow Park supremo Danny Hunter has attempted to counter their move with an offer of his own, which he declared will make his skipper the best rewarded man on the playing staff.

The recent uncertainty over Roberts' position cannot have helped the situation, but Wotton told me that he is looking forward to linking up with the boss when he jets in from Portugal on Wednesday.

"There's been a lot of stuff going on, but I want to stay at Boreham Wood," he said.

"I want to speak to the gaffer when he gets back from holiday, and I must admit that I was a little surprised that he wasn't dealt with first before he went away, there seems to have been some confusion at the club lately."

As a serving member of the RAF, Wotton is prevented from signing a contract, and I asked him how crucial to his decision it was that Roberts remained in the chair: "Of course it was very important, because I've got a lot of respect for the man and the way he got the best out of the players last season. The way he dealt with me was brilliant.

"I'm going on holiday myself in about ten days' time, and I want to get this sorted out.

"It's all going in the right direction at Wood at the moment, and we want to finish as high up the league as we can next season. It's true that I have had some offers, but Boreham Wood have been good to me so I will be good to them.

"It's a case of ambition, but I had a good chat with the chairman the other day, and I think I'll still be there next year."
