Boreham Wood 11 Maccabi 12

Water Polo Winter League Div 3

Boreham Wood must be sick of the sight of Maccabi after losing to the table toppers for the third consecutive time by just a single goal.

And this was after pegging them back to 11-11 with just seconds remaining of a match played last Thursday.

Wood had been behind throughout an entertaining clash between the division's top two teams. Ian Parkins put his side level with 30 seconds left but the joy was short-lived as Maccabi pounced at the other end to claim the points.

Wood were stunned by an early goal blitz from the opposition, as the match got underway. An Alex Shaw penalty that was saved, and two major fouls, allowed the visitors to go into a 4-1 lead in the opening period.

Richard Hime scored the first of his four goals for Wood to put them on the scoresheet.

The arrears were reduced as the next quarter got underway, thanks to a goal from Mick Radford, but Maccabi then went further in front. Ian Parkins and Richard Hime made it 6-4, but Phil Green conceded a penalty, which was converted, to allow Maccabi to once again stretch away from Wood. With the last throw of the half, Matthew Tracey netted his first ever goal for Wood with a fine reverse back shot.

Wood made the perfect start to the third quarter with strikes from Radford, Colin Unwin and Richard Hime putting them just a goal behind.

But then a major foul was conceded, allowing Maccabi to take a 10-8 lead into the final period.

A three-goal advantage was secured almost immediately before Wood staged their dramatic late fight back.

Hime and Radford both found the target, before Parkins levelled matters up to set up a nail-biting end.
