SAILING
COWES Corinthian Yacht Club hosted this year’s Flying 15 Southern Championship over the Jubilee weekend.
Only four of the 27 entries were from the IW, with 23 boats from as far afield as Chew Lake, Bewl Valley, Windermere and Loch Lomond racing in The Solent.
There were three races on the first day and two on the second, with the action broken nicely with a champagne reception at Commodore’s House, the former home of Uffa Fox, and a curry night at Cowes Corinthian’s new cavern and marquee conversion.
The first race was won by Charles Apthorp, from Steve Goacher and Greg Wells third. The fleet was a little too eager to start the second race and race officer Andrew Millband ordered a general recall. Goacher was able to secure his first win of the day followed by Wells in second place and Alan Bax third.
Goacher and Wells took first and second again in the final race of the day, with Simon Knellor third.
On Sunday, there was close racing again between Goacher and Wells. Having secured first and second overall by the end of race four, they sat out the last race, leaving Bax and Apthorp to finish first and second, making Bax third overall.
