SAILINGALMOST 50 boats turned out for the latest round of the Frostbite Series at Gurnard Sailing Club on Sunday.
But warm and sunny conditions meant the weather barely reflected the name of the competition.
After several place changes, Dave Downer sailed his Shadow into an excellent third in the ten-strong cat fleet, where Robin Leather’s monster lead was reduced to a less embarrassing distance by a big wind hole in the final stages.
After a jumped start and a recall, Mark Harrison chased the leaders hard but Giles Peckham stayed ahead to win the medium group. Barry Watkin was third.
Graham Deegan conceded his early lead to Brett Aarons in the RS400s, and they were followed in at a distance by Ben and Gail Willows at the close.
In the fast group, Keith Hayden established an early lead and held it to win from Andy Paterson’s 29er. Ella Symons stepped up from the junior group to helm Derek Ness’ RS500 into a commendable third.
In the Lasers, those in full rigs profited in the shifty conditions, with Chris Hobday taking the win from Martin Bean, and Libby Deegan third on handicap.
Mike Peddar led the final group through the first lap but Adam Coventry was timed in first, with Rebecca Metcalf second and Peddar ending up third.
The last race of the series is on December 11, followed by the annual prize-giving in the clubhouse.
