THE beginning of Ryde Arts Festival passed off in spectacular style at the weekend with almost 1,000 performers taking part in Saturday’s street parade.

The procession stretched the length of the town and included a 30-strong troupe of junkanoo performers from the Bahamas.

Performing in their first-ever European procession, the group wowed the crowd lining the route between Star Street and Eastern Gardens.

The parade kicked off a week of arts-related events, which include a long list of concerts, gigs, talks and performances at various venues in the town.
