Agony for speedway side as injury jinx strikes again

SPEEDWAYEVEN though Wightlink Islanders speedway team are not in action, their injury jinx has struck again.

The beleaguered National League side, so blighted by injury last season, were dealt another blow just before Christmas when Brandon Freemantle, who was all set to race for the Islanders at reserve, was involved in a road accident.

He broke his femur and the former under-15 champion will now be sidelined for most of the 2012 season, if not the whole year.

Freemantle was on his moped when he was in collision with a car in slippery conditions. He had to have surgery on his leg, to have the bones pinned.

He said: "I was really excited at having the chance to ride a bigger track and being with a lot more people in the team who I am friends with, but with this happening it just brings you down. I’ve just got to keep my hopes up and get fit ready for a chance to ride for the Islanders."

Islanders’ co-promoter Chris Hunt said: "We are absolutely devastated for the lad, knowing how he must feel with a team place all sorted out for the new season and something like this happens.

"Life is cruel sometimes, but Brandon can rest assured that he will be an IW rider once he is fit and ready."

Co-promoter Kevin Shepherd added: "Unfortunately, it has affected our team-building plans. Although Brandon would have come in as a three-pointer it does affect our thoughts and we have had to change tack to find another rider.

"We wish Brandon well and as soon as he is fit, he will be very much part of the Islanders’ plans."
