Frustrating end to the speedway season

Adam Ellis was named the club’s best newcomer.

SPEEDWAY

RIDERS from the Wightlink Islanders speedway team could have let their hair down at their end-of-season presentation after all, after their final match against Stoke the next day was abandoned because of bad weather.

It was soft drinks all round for the team at Saturday night’s awards evening in anticipation of their match against the Potters, but annoyingly the side travelled up north to discover on arrival that the weather was so bad that the meeting could not go ahead.

The awards night saw two riders win double prizes, with Ben Hopwood winning the rider of the year, and riders’ rider of the year, and Danny Stoneman winning the best supporting rider prize, and another from the Islanders’ supporters’ club recognising his achievement as highest bonus point scorer.

Adam Ellis, who was back in France and unable to attend, won the best newcomer award.

All squad members received an engraved memento to mark their achievements this season, after a much improved performance through the summer.
