GREAT fun last Thursday at 9am with children counting down and the band playing at the opening of the refurbished Sainsburys store.

Customers were greeted with a glass of bucks fizz and a map.

Everything has changed and there's a superb new salad bar. The band continued playing and it was a real pleasure to wander around.

If I couldn't find anything there were plenty of staff around to help.

IN 1977 the founder members of the Community Association took the plunge and purchased the school building from the County Council and set about creating a facility for the local people.

This year the centre celebrates its Silver Jubilee, knowing that over the years thousands of people have been able to use the facilities for leisure, recreation and education.

Today the centre is home to more than 50 clubs, groups and societies.

Annual membership costs £6.75 for adults £4.75 for the over 60's and £3.25 for juniors.

The office is open from 9.30am to 4pm weekdays and there is an answerphone facility at other times.

People with disabilities can access any of the ground floor facilities without assistance and there are special toilet facilities for people in wheelchairs.

TUDOR Folk Club meets at the centre every Monday, except bank holidays, at 8.15pm.

The aim of the club is to provide a friendly environment for local singers, musicians and audiences to participate at singers' nights, and to provide the opportunity to see the best names in the folk world on guest nights.

Over the years some of the top names in the folk music business have played at the Tudor Folk Club and there have been some memorable sessions when visiting musicians have been joined by friends from the audience who just wanted to be part of some great music. Anyone who has been at one of these sessions will have great memories of personalities that are entrenched in the music hall of fame.

Admission is £2.50 on singers' nights and from £5 upwards on guest nights. There are concessionary prices and for further information ring 01494 872859.
