Wightlink Islanders 60, Mildenhall Fen Tigers 33
THE Wightlink Islanders got back to winning ways in some style at Smallbrook Stadium on Tuesday night, with a thumping victory over Mildenhall.
The team were led by guest Steve Boxall — in for the injured Tom Perry — and Brendan Johnson, who were both unbeaten by Mildenhall riders all night and collected 24 points between them.
The duo were supported by a ten-point ride from skipper Ben Hopwood and Adam Ellis, who scored nine points, in a masterful team performance.
Islanders set the tone with 5-1 wins in the first four heats, with wins for Boxall, Chris Widman, Ellis and Hopwood. Mildenhall then used their tactical ride for double points in heat five, which they won 7-2 to make it 22-11, but by then the damage was already done.
Boxall then had another win with Johnson second in heat six, before Danny Stoneman made his return from last week’s burning-bike drama with a win in heat seven, to make it 32-13.
There was drama in heat nine, when Darryl Ritchings fell on the first bend of lap three, and Mildenhall’s C. Mountain ploughed into Ritchings’s bike, and flew through the air. Both were unhurt.
There were three 3-3 heat draws in the final four heats but the Islanders’ lead was never threatened.
On Sunday, the National League Fours takes place at Stoke with Adam Ellis, Darryl Ritchings, Brendan Johnson and Ben Hopwood competing for the Islanders.
On Tuesday, the Islanders take on Buxton in the National League. The event doubles up as an Earl Mountbatten Hospice fundraiser, organised by WPA Healthcare.
They will present a rider of the night prize, and volunteers from the hospice will be selling sunflowers to the crowd. Tapes go up at 7.30pm.
