TUESDAY night was a mixed one for Island sport, with agony in speedway and ecstasy in football.
There were celebrations for Newport FC fans as their sides pulled off one of their biggest results in recent years, defeating Evo Stik Premier Division side Bashley 1-0 away from home in the Hampshire Senior Cup.
Bashley, a side two leagues above Newport, were undone by a Tom McInnes goal ten minutes from time. The win was all the more remarkable given Newport were without the services of the influential Iain Seabrook, GC Giancovich and Aleks Przespolewski.
Meanwhile, at Smallbrook Stadium, Wightlink Islanders failed to beat Mildenhall Fen Tigers by enough points in their National League play-off semi-final to win on aggregate.
Islanders had a tough task on their hands needing to claw back 22 points from the first leg, and despite a great performance from teen star Adam Ellis, could only win by one point, 45-44.
