SPEEDWAYTHE Wightlink Islanders announced their fifth signing for 2010 as they revealed they had agreed a one-year loan with last year’s league champions, the Bournemouth Buccaneers, to secure 26-year-old Danny Warwick.
The Dreaded One, as he’s known because of his distinctive dreadlocked hairstyle, celebrated by going to Switzerland for an extended snowboarding holiday.
Speaking before flying out, he said: "I am delighted to have signed for the Wightlink Islanders.
"It’s a track I like and I’ve always got on well with everybody on the Island and I look forward to getting back into action after missing a lot of last year through injury.
"The team as it stands at the moment, even with two signings still to go, looks pretty good to me withNick Simmons as good a No.1 as any in this league and Brendan Johnson, plus Ben Hopwood and Tom Hill are riders with great potential and if I can produce the form I know I’m capable of, enjoy myself on a bike and win races for fun again, then we’re in business."
One other rider keen indeed to break into the Wightlink Islanders team this year is youngster Rikki Mullins, who will start the season at number 8, and, like all riders, will be shaking off any winter cobwebs at training sessions on Tuesday nights in March.
• Chris Johnson, whose 2009 season was ended abruptly by injury, has been given the all-clear by doctors to resume racing and he’s already looking forward to the new season. However, it seems almost certain he won’t be included in the Wightlink Islanders 2010 septet and is eager to let other clubs know he’s seeking a team place.
