WIGHTLINK Islanders suffered a horror weekend, with a heavy defeat, the sudden retirement of one of its riders and a serious injury to another.
The side were dealt a blow before they had even raced, when reserve Danny Stoneman announced he was to retire from the sport. Thankfully Dan Berwick was found at the 11th hour to deputise, but it was hardly ideal.
At the meet, at Mildenhall Fen Tigers, they went on to lose 63-30. They were only trailing by four points after five heats, but when Gary Cottham crashed out and suffered a broken collarbone, the Islanders were seemingly knocked off their tracks.
Mildenhall sped ahead, leaving the Islanders — who also had mechanical problems for skipper Danny Warwick and top scorer Aaron Baseby — in their wake.
