WIGHTLINK Islanders were left reeling on Tuesday night after the team suffered its third home defeat in a row, this time to National League leaders, Newport Hornets.

And the result has left promoters and team managers Kevin Shepherd and Chris Hunt deflated and with no choice but to look at making some changes within the side.

The team once again suffered more bad luck throughout the meeting, but Chris said: "Bad luck aside, Newport are top of the National League and they were better than us, it was as simple as that.

"The boys knew jobs were on the line last night, and we now have no choice but to look to strengthen the team. With the new riders’ averages out, we can bring in another heat leader. But that is providing we can find one."

Skipper Nick Simmons led the way for the Islanders with 14 points, with Ben Hopwood next in line on the points’ haul with eight.

However, a single point from Dean Felton, no points at all from Danny Hodgson and just five from Tom Hill, meant the Islanders fell well short.

Reports from the Islanders’ pits suggest negotiations have been taking place behind the scenes with more than one rider, with a view to them joining the Islanders for their next home meeting on June 29.

Chris added: "As soon as we have reached an agreement with regard to a new signing, we will go public with the news.

"We are aware the fans are unhappy with recent performances and we are keen to demonstrate that we are doing everything in our power to remedy the current situation."
