A SPEEDWAY rider was taken to St Mary’s Hospital, Newport, following a crash at Smallbrook Stadium last night (Thursday).

Wightlink Islanders’ team captain, Nick Simmons, and the Dudley Heathens top rider, Kyle Newman, were involved in the crash during the 13th heat of the meeting.

The accident occurred on the fourth bend of the race when Mr Newman clipped Mr Simmons’s back wheel, causing both riders to fall off their machines.

Mr Simmons was able to walk away from the accident but Mr Newman was placed on a spinal board before being taken to St Mary’s Hospital, suffering from severe bruising.

He was examined by doctors and released from the hospital at 2am today (Friday).

Team manager of Wightlink Islanders, Kevin Shepherd, said the crash had been a 'racing incident.’ He said: "Both got away with very bad bruising. Kyle looks as if he has gone 20 rounds with Mike Tyson. It was a pure racing incident to be honest."
