SPEEDWAYFEARS the Wightlink Islanders speedway team are to drop out of the National League next season have been quashed.

On the back of a disappointing season, rumours had suggested the Wightlink Islanders had lost their sponsorship and dropped out of the National League.

But the team’s co-promoter, Kevin Shepherd, said the Wightlink Islanders were committed to competing next season.

He said: "We would like to quash the rumours doing the rounds saying we are losing our sponsors and not running.

"The club has never been better on a financial footing and work has already started on preparing for next season."

Mr Shepherd admitted the club was disappointed with this season but said it was aiming for better things in 2012.

He said: "This year wasn’t the best on the track and results don’t lie.

"We held a very pro-active meeting where all the members of the track staff were invited to come along and air their views about things they felt needed to be improved.

"It was a very encouraging meeting with views and suggestions from both sides coming to the table.

"We realise it takes input from everybody within the club to make things work and improve and we want to start preparing well in advance for next season so we are raring to go."

Mr Shepherd said he hoped the National League’s AGM could be held earlier than in previous years, to allow clubs to plan ahead.

He also urged all the club’s staff and helpers to attend Saturday’s end-of-season presentation night at Smallbrook, which starts at 7.30pm.
