Speedway supremo to visit

Monday, June 28, 2010

SPEEDWAYONE of speedway’s best-loved stars will be making a special appearance at tonight's (Tuesday) Wightlink Islanders meeting with Scunthorpe Saints.

Former Southampton Saint and four-time world champion, Barry Briggs, 75, will be riding into Smallbrook Stadium as part of his marathon motorcycle ride throughout the UK.

Briggo, as he is affectionately known, is on a riding tour for 12 former riders who suffered spinal injuries on the track. He is aiming to raise £120,000.

The ride, which began in John O’Groats, Scotland, is taking him to almost every speedway stadium in the UK as well as trips to Denmark and Poland.

Barry is only too aware of the plight of those who suffer spinal injuries, as his own son, Tony, broke his neck at a young age while racing speedway. It was an agonising time for the family as they witnessed his paralysis, first hand, for several months.

"Fortunately, Tony recovered", said Briggs. "But these 12 boys are not nearly so lucky."

Following some poor performances at home in recent weeks, the Islanders management are determined to see their side win on Tuesday, and with Barry at the stadium too, fans are advised to arrive early.

Turnstiles open at 6pm, with the parade at 7.20pm and the first race at 7.30pm.
