MARTIAL ARTS

DEFEAT was not part of the vocabulary of the IW Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA Academy, as they put in some terrific performances at the Gym01 Submission Grappling and MMA Inter-club Championships.

Academies from all over the south coast came to compete and the IW’s contingent of seven fighters — Gary Hewson, Ben Mahar, Jacob Mellar, Mateusz Halas, Doug Atkinson, Callum Atkinson and Ronan Foley — came away with 11 wins and three draws.

Club coach Martin Dell said: "They trained hard for this competition and their performances showed just that. I think a special mention should go to Callum and Ronan, who are just 14 and 15 years of age.

"They fought against older, bigger and stronger opponents with adult rules and won with flawless performances, proving that technique overcomes brute force."
