THE Hampshire Road Race League kicked off on Saturday with the Overton five-mile race — and 18 IW runners were involved.
Leading the way, running for Stubbington Green, was Simon McMorran, who completed the course in 29.04 for 30th overall and first vet50.
Next, for West Wight Road Runners, was Andrew McEwan, who came 85th in a time of 31.39, with Ryde Harriers’ super-vet Pete Young just 13 seconds behind in 91st. His time was enough to win the vet60 prize.
Three IW Road Runners were next in line. Dave Cass came 110th in 32.45, Polly Segar was the first IW woman in 33.39 for 142nd, and the quickly improving Tim Keyte was 194th, in 35.20.
Ryde Harriers Mandy Womack and Peter Still were only ten seconds apart, finishing in 35.32 and 35.42 respectively, for 204th and 208th.
Finishing in 37.10 for 253rd was West Wight’s Peter Jolliffe, with Julian Trout two minutes behind in 39.17, for 312th. Andrew Tapsell finished in 39.38 for the IW Road Runners, coming 319th, with West Wight’s Nils Jolliffe close behind in 40.10, for 332nd.
Completing the IW contingent was Claire Campbell (IWRR, 40.35, 340th), Stephen Lee (Ryde Harriers, 41.00, 350th), Tom Martin (IWRR, 42.55, 381st), Abigail Cooke (Ryde Harriers, 43.32, 391st), John Randles (Ryde Harriers, 46.09, 421st) and Julia Trout (WWRR, 48.17, 440th).
Fifteen Ryde Harriers plus six guests took part in the club’s one-mile championship, the final track event of the club’s summer series at the Fairway Sports complete.
Winning was Tom Blackwell in a time of 5.08.6 with Sean Furmidge second in 5.17.5 and junior Dominic Jacobs coming third in 5.31.5.
The first woman was Sarah Kavanagh in 5.57.7, with Mary Norman second in 6.28.1 and Emily Wildon third in 6.32.5.
Guests Cohan Tyler and Simon McMorran were second and third respectively.
Simon McMorran came 29th out of a field of 242 in the final Portsmouth Lakeside 5km race, finishing in 17.17, which also won him the third vet50 prize.
