RAILTRACK is set to consult with Shortlands residents on the impact of major works to the Eurostar line.

Two years of work is needed at Shortlands Junction so Eurostar trains can operate effectively. A forum is to be set up to ease communication between the train company and residents during the disruption.

A children's playground has already been knocked down and replaced in preparation.

Shortlands Residents' Association chairman Vera Harvey said: "We have opposed the works because residents are being sacrificed for the Eurostar. But now Railtrack has been granted permission to go ahead, we need to make sure we communicate properly about the problems which arise.

"The disturbance to some residents is going to be massive. We are worried about noise levels during the night.

"Railtrack has mentioned rehousing people in hotels, but it would cause problems.

Railtrack spokesman Holly Garner said: "We want to give residents the opportunity to communicate with us fully and as frequently as they want.

"This is major work and we want to minimise the disruption it will cause."
