BADMINTON A YOUNG IW badminton player defied the odds to win a bronze medal at the Badminton England under-11s County Circuit Tournament in Oxfordshire.
Jack Hobbins, ten, of Five Houses, near Shalfleet, was the sole IW representative in the competition.
Things didn’t start too well for Jack, his nerves preventing him from getting through to the knock-out stages of the singles’ competition.
However, in the doubles there was surprising success.
Jack’s regular partner, Aaron Scott-Roberts, wasn’t able to make this tournament, so Jack teamed up with a new partner from Warwickshire, Ewan Steven.
Even though they had never met before, and only had one hour’s practice, they won all their pool matches and progressed to the semi-finals, where they narrowly lost 11-9, 12-14, 9-11. Despite this disappointment they went on to win the bronze.
His mum, Gemma Hobbins, and grandfather and coach, Keith Hobbins, were delighted with the effort Jack had put in to get the bronze medal in his first tournament at this level.
