GOLFWHEN Peter and Brenda Reynolds, moved to the Island from Kent four years ago, they joined Ryde Golf Club to learn a new sport and make new friends.
And now the husband and wife, formerly of Gravesend and now of Seaview, have proved such a hit with the club that they have been named captains for 2012.
Peter, 65, and Brenda, 67, of Seaview Lane, were vice-captains last year and made the natural progression to captain this year. It means the pair will host several events and be the figureheads of the men’s and ladies’ sections.
"When we came here we liked the atmosphere and made friends quickly," said Brenda. "It’s a fantastic club and we love it to bits. And we always have something to talk about when we’re at home, especially this year."
Neither had played golf before moving to the Island but the pair have made steady improvements and Peter’s handicap is down to 24, while Brenda’s is at 35. Brenda is happy to play golf as a social sport, and Peter is keen to bring his handicap down this year.
"It’s going to be a good year," said Peter. "We’ve got the golf bug."
Ryde Golf Club hosts several charity events each year, including the annual Mencap Day, the IW Disabled Golf Open and this year, the IW Ladies’ Golf Association’s Butterfly Trophies competition.
It means that, while captains of other clubs have chosen charities, Peter and Brenda have chosen instead to put any money they raise into course improvements.
