DARREN Masterton put recent golfing heartbreak behind him last weekend with a brilliant double victory at Osborne Golf Club men’s championships.

After a year away from the club, when he joined Shanklin and Sandown, Darren rejoined Osborne to reclaim a title he had already won three times — but this time he did even better, winning both the scratch and handicap title.

On surprisingly fast greens considering the recent weather, many of the 48 golfers were caught out, and scores were high.

However, Darren, 26, of East Cowes, held his nerve and posted a consistent 70 on the first day to lead by five shots.

"I had a five-shot lead, but a couple of weeks ago I had a four-shot lead after the first day, but lost on a play-off, so it wasn’t in the bag," he said. "So it feels good to win."

Darren went on to shoot a 72 on the second day, to post a gross 142. That was enough to win the scratch championship by ten shots from Scott Meek, and 18 shots ahead of third-placed Matthew Williams.

Meanwhile, it was also enough to take the handicap title.

Playing off scratch, his 142 was one shot ahead of Grant Hesse. Third, with a handicap score of 144 was Peter Wright. There were fourth and fifth place prizes for Glyn Taylor and John Oakes respectively.
