SHOOTING DEREK Davies earned a podium place at the Ely NRSA Lightweight Sporting Rifle national championships last weekend.Derek, representing Newport and District Rifle Club, was competing alongside club-mate Alan Foxworthy in the competition, which is shot from an unsupported standing position at 20 yards.As with the prone events, held earlier this year with success for IW shooters, this competition started off as a postal event, in four divisions based on shooters’ averages.Derek, in D class, for average scores under 85, came third, while Alan, shooting in A class, for averages over 92, came sixth and just short of the medals.Meanwhile, at Newtown, the club shot its annual Service Rifle Championship Cup.All the rifles had to be pre-1956 bolt action service rifles with original sights. In foul weather David Atkin gained top place with 63 points, with Ben Sadler second on 50 and Steve Noel third.
